The Living Building

New Mexico’s New Tech Workforce

I have spent my life watching talented people leave our state because they felt the future was happening somewhere else. We have the best labs in the world, but for too long, there has been a gap between the PhDs in the lab and the people on the street. That gap is where our economic potential disappears.

In New Mexico, we are closing that gap with the Human Quantum.

The Human Algorithm

The biggest myth about this technology is that you need a doctorate to touch it. While the PhDs are the brains designing the code, we need a body to make it work. A quantum computer is a physical machine. It needs cryogenics, lasers, vacuum systems, and precision wiring.

It needs a trade.

In early 2026, we are seeing the Human Algorithm in action. CNM Ingenuity has launched the Quantum Learning Lab (QuLL) right in the heart of Albuquerque. They are not teaching people how to write complex physics papers. They are teaching them how to be Quantum Technicians in 10 to 12 weeks.

A Trade, Not Just a Degree

This is about certification-driven education. We are taking the skills our workforce already has—electronics, plumbing, welding, and IT—and giving them a quantum upgrade. By focusing on the "Hardware in the Loop," we are creating a middle-class backbone for the second quantum revolution.

  • The Starting Line: These technician roles are starting at $65,000 to $85,000 annually.

  • The Career Path: With specialized experience in cryogenic maintenance or laser alignment, these become $100,000+ careers that do not require a four-year degree or a desk-bound environment.

  • The Handshake: By partnering CNM with Sandia National Laboratories and companies like Qunnect, we are ensuring that the moment a student finishes their bootcamp, there is a high-paying job waiting for them right here.

The Math of Retention: SB 177 and the Workforce

To move the needle, we are leveraging specific 2026 funding that targets the "Human" side of the equation:

  • The $10 Million Tech Jobs Training Fund: As part of the SB 177 package, this specific allocation provides tuition reimbursement and equipment for quantum-track students, making the QuLL program essentially free for qualifying New Mexicans.

  • The $5 Million Rural Outreach Grant: We are taking the Human Quantum to Gallup, Roswell, and Las Cruces. We are using remote lab equipment to ensure that a student in a rural community has the same access to quantum hardware as a student in Albuquerque.

  • The Workforce Incentive Program: New 2026 state tax credits now offer businesses up to $15,000 for every local graduate they hire into a quantum-technician role, creating a "pull" effect from the private sector.

Stopping the Bounce

The Human Quantum is how we stop the "bounce" of our talent to other states. It is how we give a kid from the South Valley or a worker from Gallup a reason to stay. We are building an ecosystem where you can grow up here, get trained here, and lead a global revolution here. We are not just building faster computers. We are building a more resilient, more prosperous version of ourselves.

The era of the brain drain is over. The era of the Human Quantum has begun.
